बोलने और भाषा के विकास के लिए जीवन के पहले 3 साल महत्वपूर्ण होते हैं। छोटे बच्चे नए शब्द सीखना शुरू करते हैं, उनका उपयोग करते हैं और ध्वनियों के साथ खेलते हैं। चूंकि यह बच्चे के लिए सीखने का चरण है, उसे एक ऐसे वातावरण की आवश्यकता होती है जो सुनने और बोलने के मौकों से भरा हो।
इसे भाषा सीखने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण समय कहा जाता है। यदि बोलने और भाषा के संपर्क के बिना महत्वपूर्ण समय बीत जाता है, तो छोटे बच्चे के लिए सीखना मुश्किल हो जाता है। बच्चे बोलने और भाषा के विकास में दूसरे बच्चो से भिन्न हो सकते हैं, पर बोलने और भाषा के विकास के कुछ चरण होते हैं जिनका वे अपनी उम्र के अनुसार पालन करते हैं। 

आइये ऐसे ही कुछ चरणों को समझते हैं :
1 साल 
•   बीना मतलब की आवाजे, (बाबाबाबा, लालाला)।
•   आसान शब्दों और वाक्यों का जवाब देना (नहीं, बैठ जाओ) और नमस्ते कहना
•   कपड़े से लुका चुप्पी जैसे गेम खेलना।
•  1 या 2 शब्द बोलना, जैसे मामा, बाबा, दादा ।

2 साल 
• पूछे जाने पर नाक, कान , आंख , हाथ इत्यादि बताना । 
• 2-भाग के वाक्य बोलना , (यहाँ आओ, खिलौना लाओ) बहुत सारे नए शब्दों का प्रयोग करना।
• 2 शब्दों को एक साथ रखकर बोलना, (मम्मा आओ, मम्मा चलें,
• 150-300 शब्दों की शब्दावली ।

 3 वर्ष 
• दो भाग वाले वाक्यों का पालन करना, (अपना टेडी बियर लें और उसे बिस्तर पर रखें)।
• नए शब्दों को शीघ्रता से समझना और उनका उपयोग करना।
• चीजों के बारे में बात करने के लिए 3 शब्दों को एक साथ रखना।
• 900-1000 शब्दों की शब्दावली हो।
• छोटे प्रश्न पूछना।

4 साल 
• दूसरे कमरे से बुलाए जाने पर आवाज़ का जवाब देना।
• कुछ रंगों, कुछ आकृतियों और परिवार के सदस्यों को समझना।
• सर्वनाम, बहुवचन का प्रयोग करना।
• 4-शब्द वाले वाक्यों का उपयोग करना। दिन के दौरान क्या हुआ के बारे में बात करना 
• लगभग 2000 शब्दों की शब्दावली ।

5 वर्षीय
• 3-भाग वाले वाक्य समझना।
• सभी व्यंजनो को शब्दों में कहना। कुछ गलतियाँ कर सकते हैं। (व,च, श, र) 
•  संख्याएं और अक्षर समझना।
• लंबे वाक्य बनाना और एक छोटी कहानी बताना।
•व्यक्ति और स्थिति के अनुसार, अलग-अलग तरीकों से बात करना ।


ये मूल  बोलने और भाषा विकास के चरण हैं। यदि इनमें से कोई देरी हो तो माता-पिता को एक भाषण और भाषा रोगविज्ञानी (एसएलपी) से परामर्श लेना चाहिए। SLPs मानकीकृत परीक्षणों का उपयोग करके बच्चे का मूल्यांकन करते हैं। परीक्षणों के आधार पर वे भाषण चिकित्सा (और यदि आवश्यक हो तो अन्य इलाज) की सिफारिश कर सकते हैं।
