World Autism Awareness Day 2021 : Better Speech Clinic

April 2nd was declared as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations General Assembly to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.


The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2021: “Inclusion in the Workplace: Challenges and opportunities in a Post-Pandemic World”.

Here are few characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder

·       Under or over reaction to stimuli using one or more than one sense.

·       Speech & language delay

·       Inappropriate social interaction

·       Unusual emotional reaction and expression

·       Repeated actions and body movements

·       Poor attention and eye contact

·       Robotic speech

·       Difficulty in adjusting when there are changes in routine

 

In India, according to the 2011 census, the study revealed that one in 66 children had autism.

Each individual exhibits a different symptom making it difficult to come up with a one-size-fits-all plan for ASD. But there are some basic principles on which the rehabilitation for children with ASD rests on. 

A comprehensive rehabilitation program will include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, educational support, and a number of other interventions to help children and parents.
